About Amanda

Her story

I am the owner and curator of the Sanctuary Gallery, and I have been a passionate Australian wildlife artist and author for quite some years now.

I was very shy as a young girl and teenager and would take solace in looking at the beauty of birds and animals and marvelling at just how wonderfully they were made. I remember thinking that a beautiful heart and mind must have created such beautiful creatures. I began to paint them in my teens and grew in deeper love and appreciation at the intricacy of a bird's wing and the radiant and dazzling colours of so many Australian birds.

Through my artwork, I strive to capture the beauty and essence of Australia's unique and diverse wildlife. To appreciate that beauty is to strive to protect and preserve it too.

With a deep passion and appreciation for nature and wildlife, I love to paint the beauty of this world. From the delicate brushstrokes of a bird's feathers to the intricate details of flowers, each piece is a reflection of my love for this beautiful world.

About Amanda Tuohy

Amanda Tuohy has a love and passion for creativity and the arts, and has been an artist of one kind or another her whole life. With degrees in theology and creative arts, she is a classically trained singer, has studied drama, and has written and illustrated two books.

Her paintings have won awards including:

• Wildlife Art Society of Australasia: Best Exhibit
• Warrnambool Rotary Art Show: Best Mixed Medium
• Stawell Rotary Art Show: Best Exhibit and People's Choice Award

Amanda's hope is that her art can help inspire people, and open their eyes and hearts to the wonder and beauty that is all around us. She also wants to remind us to honour and protect all creatures great and small.

Amanda is a gifted communicator and has spoken at all sorts of community groups (Rotary, Probus, garden clubs and more), churches, women's events and conferences. Weaving a vision for the arts and creativity with her deeply spiritual faith, she brings a message that inspires and encourages people to open their hearts to the wonder and beauty all around us.

Painting in gouache

Amanda paints Australian wildlife and birds. In her own words:

I’ve only ever painted in gouache. I love the variations and nuances of colour I can mix with it. Its texture and versatility mean I can capture the sharp lines and intricate detail of a bird’s feather or an animal’s eye, and also the washes and broader strokes of colour that give my paintings their depth.

Prints made in-house

Every print is a giclée print, which we make ourselves from a high-resolution scan of Amanda's original painting. We print with an Epson SureColor SC-P906 using Epson UltraChrome PRO10 pigment inks, on museum-quality fine art papers made from 100% cotton:

• Epson Signature Worthy Hot Press Bright (340 gsm): ultra-smooth, with a bright white surface for vivid colour.
• Hahnemühle William Turner (310 gsm): a traditional mould-made watercolour paper with a distinctive textured feel.

Both papers are acid-free. Each print is hand-signed by Amanda and is part of an open edition.

We choose the paper that best suits each painting.
